Win at Texas Holdem Poker with One Tweak
How can one tweak help you win at texas holdem?
It is such a powerful concept which is understood by many players but rarely is it put to practice. Here is a quote from my coach Tommy Angelo to put things in perspective.
Saying that position is important at Texas Hold'em is like saying that altitude is important at flying, or that water is important at swimming.
In big bet games position is a lot more important than in limit games.
Because of the exponential nature of the bet sizes on each subsequent street it is more important than almost anything to have position.
What is So Important About Position?
Position gives you one crucial advantage.
That is the advantage of information. If you constantly have position on your opponents you win the information war.
Wouldn't you agree that the player who has the most information the most times has a bigger chance of winning in the end?
An Example ...
A texas holdem player open limps in the cut-off and you raise Ace Jack on the button, the blinds fold and the player in the cut-off calls.
Flop comes down A 6 3 with 2 hearts
The cut-off checks, You bet 2/3rds of the pot, and he calls.
Turn is 4 of hearts putting a possible flush out there.
Suddenly the cut-off bets pot. You know he is a tight player and he most likely has a very big hand here so you can fold your Ace Jack safely.
What about if you had Ace Jack out of position?
Driving Without Headlights Can Be Fatal
You raise Ace Jack in the cut-off and the same player type from above calls your preflop raise and the blinds fold.
Flop comes down A 6 3 with 2 hearts again.
You bet and the button quickly calls.
Turn is the 4 of hearts (where do all these hearts come from??)
You check and the button now bets.
What to do now? You know he might have a weaker ace here but you also know he might be betting the scarecard since you could have missed your hand on the flop and just continuation bet because you raised preflop.
Coming Full Circle
Do you see how position can affect your decision?
It can easily make the decision very easy or very difficult.
This is why in the Texas Holdem Preflop Play article I advised playing tight in the blinds and in early position.
Why?
Because you are more likely to be out of position than if you raised in late position.
This means that you can play slightly more hands because you have more information to act on.
There Is A Lot Of Money To Be Made Just By ...
Understanding fundamental texas holdem strategy and specifically by understanding position and applying it.
It can show you how to win at texas holdem.
It is a crucial pillar holding up the house of cards.
Even at stakes as high as $600 and $1,000 buy-in No-Limit Texas Hold'em you'll find regular professional players making the mistake of playing too loose out of position.
So you can imagine how much of this must be going on at cash game stakes even lower!
It is like a disease!
Make sure you get vaccinated for it ;-)
Summary
- Position helps you win the information war
- Position makes your decisions easier
- You make more money when you are in position
