Texas Holdem Poker Tables

Here’s a good rule: if you apply Pledge to it, it’s not for playing poker. Face it; sitting hunched over a crowded kitchen table is not going to make you feel like the next Gus Hanson when you shove your chips into the pot.

Cards fly off into the next room, pointy table corners jab players in the chest, and the dog is getting sick and tired of getting hit by flying chips every time you limp with pocket aces and lose to 6-9 offsuit. (What did I tell you about that anyway?)

Texas Holdem poker tables are a hot item these days, and for good reason. They’re a great addition to any home player’s stock of poker accessories. In fact, next to poker chips and playing cards, a poker table is the next most useful item you can buy.

Let’s take a look at some holdem poker tables in different price ranges.

Economy Poker Tables

If you’re looking for a cheap poker table, the most inexpensive item you will find is a folding poker table top that attaches to your existing kitchen or dining room table. Texas Holdem folding table tops are good for…..well, nothing. Buy one if you want to lose all your friends.

Folding poker table tops, known also as poker extender table tops, have 3 primary features – uselessly shallow cup holders, uselessly shallow chip trays, and one guaranteed upending of the playing surface when one of your pals accidentally leans on the edge or hits his knee on the underside while jumping up and down in excitement after beating your pocket aces with 6-9 offsuit.

Everyone wants a bargain poker table, but $40 dollars may not seem like such a deal when you’re paying a hundred dollar cleaning bill to get the stains out of your carpet. You get what you pay for, and cheap poker tables are no exception.

Midrange Poker Tables

An affordable alternative is to buy a foldable Texas Hold’em poker table. These tables come with padded rails, plastic cup holders, and quality felt surfaces. Some have a foldable center as well as folding legs. I prefer the ones without a folding center because cards sometimes get stuck in ridge of the folding center poker tables.

Folding tables seat anywhere form between 6-10 players, depending on the shape of the table top. You can usually choose between metal legs or some type of faux wood finish. Metal folding chairs go just fine with either, which will save you a bundle.

The nice thing about the foldable poker tables, of course, is easy storability and portability. If you have a truck or SUV, you can even haul one to your friend’s house for a poker game. I like to take mine out on the back deck and play poker outside.

Expect to pay anywhere from between $120-$350 for a folding poker table.

Premium Poker Tables

If you’re fortunate enough to be able to afford a premium poker table, then you’ve got some really great choices. High end poker tables are all about style and class. They are meant to be permanent furniture pieces that complement the room. If you have your own game room or poker den, you should be careful to choose a poker table that enhances the look and feel of it.

The first thing you’re going to need to decide is whether you want a poker table with a dining top or one that functions as a stand-alone piece. My attitude is that if you’re going to go big, then just buy the best damned table you can afford and let your wife worry about buying the dining room furniture.

High end poker tables come with a variety of wood finishes including cherry, mahogany, and walnut. The choice, obviously, is a matter of personal preference. You’ll also want to give thought to whether you’d like a felt or leather poker table top. I prefer leather to a felt poker top because it feels swankier.

Premium holdem poker tables run anywhere from $1000-$4500 for a non-customized table (we’ll get into customized tables later.) Not bad, but don’t forget the poker chairs! No way can you spend this kind of money buying a classy poker table and settle for folding chairs. Buying premium poker chairs really adds up, running you from $100-$600 per chair. Keep this in mind when budgeting.

There are some non-folding tables with chrome pedestals or oak finishes that hover somewhere in the range of $500-$800, but I’m not much of a fan of them. They don’t have the easy storage of a folding table and they aren’t nice enough to occupy a permanent place in your home. Either buy a folding holdem poker table or go big time with an expensive poker table – that’s what I think.
