Texas Holdem Poker Chips

poker-chipsA plastic baggie full of cheap plastic chips might be ok for grandma’s card club, but if you’re going to be hosting regular poker games, then you’re going to want to play with some quality Texas Holdem poker chips.

Nothing makes a poker game come alive like the feel of real poker chips and the sound they make as they’re dropped into the pot or raked toward you in a giant pile. Whether you’re stacking ‘em up into an imposing fortress to remind your drunk buddy to stay off your big blind or riffling them between your fingers menacingly while deciding whether to call an all-in, quality chips give your game an authenticity that just makes the entire experience better.

Now is a great time to buy hold’em poker chips. With poker tournaments being broadcast on television almost every day, the market for poker accessories is hot – and that means a great selection of poker chips to choose from.

Although you may be able to find them in a department store, most people prefer to buy poker chips online. I’d go this route myself, but before you do, there are few things you’ll want to know about Texas Hold’em poker chips.

Weight

As you’re browsing online poker stores, you’ll notice strange descriptions like this: 11.5g Texas Holdem Poker Chip. Don’t be intimidated. The number simply refers to the weight of the chip measured in grams. Standard weights for consumer poker chips are 8.5g, 9g, 10g, 11.5g, and 13.5 grams. Most suppliers claim that 11.5 is the official weight of casino poker chips in order to lend authenticity to their product, but the truth is that a typical casino poker chip weighs around 10g or slightly less.

Composite vs. Clay Poker Chips

More important to the quality and feel of a poker chip is its material. Composite poker chips are made of compressed plastic material and the cheaper of the two, costing anywhere from 3 cents to 10 cents per chip. For a more authentic poker chip, you’ll want to go with clay poker chips.

There are two kinds of clay chips – injection molded clay chips and compression molded clay chips. The injection molded chips are also referred to as ceramic chips or composite clay chips.

Purist will claim that compression molded clay chips are the only ones that can be counted as authentic casino chips, but in reality there are some really good injection molded poker chips available. These will run you from 15 to 22 cents per chip.

Go with the compression molded chips if you’re a bit of a tight butt, but remember that these authentic clay chips can only be washed individually with a small brush and detergent – something to consider the next time your Cheeto eating poker buddies come by to play. They also don’t do well in extreme temperatures. Expect to pay anywhere from $1.00-$1.50 per chip for them.
