Texas Holdem Poker Chip Sets

A Texas Holdem poker chip set is a nice touch Whether you hold a weekly game or just want a good set for your party on New Year’s Eve, Texas Holdem poker chip sets are a great entertainment investment that you’ll get use out of for years to come.

Gathering Info on Poker Chips

There are a few things to consider when looking for a chip set. The first thing you’ll want to decide is which kind of poker chips that you’d like in your set. Accurate info on poker chips can be difficult to find, so I’ve written some articles that give some background on the different kinds of poker chips. Check them out first if you haven’t read them already or if you just need a good poker chips review to refresh your memory.

Texas Holdem Poker Chip Sets Online

These days, the easiest way to find a good deal on a set of chips is to buy your poker chip set online. Ebay is absolutely stuffed with poker chip sets for sale, as are online poker supply stores. There really is no need to drive to a brick and mortar store in search of a good set of poker chips. Your online selection will dwarf anything you’ll find in a brick and mortar store that doesn’t specifically specialize in poker accessories.

Chip Count

Most holdem poker chip sets include a case, a couple of decks of playing cards, a couple of cheap dice for you to toss around after losing the rent money, and, of course, a poker chip rack with chips. People are often confused at how many poker chips they should buy with their set. A good rule of thumb for me is 300 chips for every 4-5 players. Of course you can play with fewer chips by increasing their relative worth, but most players think it’s more fun to play with giant chip stacks. I know I do.

Chip sets usually come in increments of 300, 500, and 1000, but many online poker stores will allow you to customize the number of chips in your sets by increments of 50 or 100.

Poker Chip Colors

Most online poker stores allow you to customize your poker chip sets by selecting the color combination of the chips included with the set. 3-4 colors are probably fine for most chip sets unless you’re hosting a large home Texas holdem tournament with a lot of players. In that case, go with 5 or more.

Choosing chip colors and assigning them values is largely a matter of personal preference. At my home games, I’m always consistent in valuing each color the same so that regulars don’t get confused from week to week. For additional consistency, you can always buy chips with denominations stamped on them.

Poker Chip Cases

Poker chip cases come in wood, aluminum, and clear acrylic. The acrylic cases are the most basic, but have zero style. If you travel a lot with your chips, an aluminum poker case is every bit as functional as an acrylic case and will always contain slots for holding your playing cards as well.

For maximum elegance, go with a wood poker case. Usually made with oak, mahogany, or cherry, wood poker cases typically have a smaller capacity of 300 chips and don’t always have extra storage for other poker accessories. They do, however, look great. For travel, you can go with a wood humidor-style case with a carrying handle. If you plan on keeping your hold’em poker chip set at home, a two level case is nice or, for a classic feel, you can always go with a carrousel. Carrousel chip cases do usually have handles, but I don’t think that they are good for travel, as the chips spill everywhere if the case tips over.
