Chips Needed for Texas Holdem - Amounts, Colors and Denominations.
I’ve received several emails with the subject "How Many Chips Needed for Texas Holdem?" asking me for the right number of chips needed for Texas Holdem games, so I thought it might be useful to put together some information about chip structures for Holdem tournaments and ring games.
Number of Chips Needed for Texas Holdem Tournaments
Probably the most common question players have when setting up a home game is how many chips are needed for a Texas Holdem tournament. The answer to this question depends on how many players will be participating in your tournament. If you have 6 or fewer players, then 300 chips should be enough to cover it. From between 7 to 10 players, I recommend at least 500 chips, adding an additional 100 chips for every 3 players after that.
Number of Chip Colors for Holdem Tournaments
You’ll want at least 3 colors to represent different denominations for any Holdem tournament. If you’re playing with 10 or fewer players, 3 or 4 colors is optimal. From between 10 to 30 players, you’ll want to use 4 or 5 chip colors.
Standard Poker Chip Colors
When buying poker chips, color selection is often just a matter of personal preference, but there are some standard colors that are used to represent usual betting amounts. Not every casino or poker room follows these standards, but many do.
Again, these values do not have to be linked to the colors that I’ve listed. If the players at your tournament don’t usually frequent casinos or card rooms, then they won’t know or care what the usual poker chip color assignments are. Keeping chip color assignments consistent from game to game is more important than the values that you assign to them.
Starting Poker Chip Counts
I recommend beginning a Texas Holdem tournament with chip counts from between 40-60 x the starting big blind. Regardless of the buy-in, using big, round numbers to designate starting chip counts is usually preferable for two reasons: a) the large imaginary value makes it exciting from a psychological perspective; b) round numbers are easy to add and subtract.
To calculate your chip counts and denominations, we’ll start with a $1000 starting chip value for each player. Dividing this amount by 50 gives us a starting big blind of $20. A good rule of thumb is to make each progressive chip value 4-5 times the last chip value, so if you have 3 colors you can go with $5, $25, and $100 chips.
How Many of Each Chip Denomination?
You’ll want to start your players with a generous number of the lower denominations so that they will feel as though they have a lot of chips to do battle with. Again, this is purely psychological, but having bigger piles of chips to stack and shove into the pot is a lot more fun and encourages people to get in there and mix it up with each other.
How many starting chips are just right? There is no set standard, but around 50 chips is a nice amount to have in front of you. Let’s return to our example and see how these could be broken down.
This gives us a total of 52 chips with a nice distribution between denominations.
How Many Poker Chips Needed for Texas Holdem Ring Games?
You won’t need a chip distribution that varies much from tournament Holdem for ring games in Limit and No-Limit Holdem. I like to keep the lowest denomination equal to the small blind and work from there.
In ring games, the number of colors can be limited to three since there will be a maximum of 10 players and a fixed buy-in. There should be no need for coloring up unless a couple of players are absolutely running over your game. In this case, email me their names so I know not to play with them.
Some players prefer chip denominations in the amount of both the small and big blinds when playing in a ring game. If you find this necessary, you should use a greater amount of chips that reflect the value of the big blind, since small blinds are rarely in play.
One thing to remember about ring games is that the chip denominations should reflect real dollar values as opposed to being assigned arbitrary values. In most cases, you can use the same poker chips for ring games as you would Texas Holdem tournaments.
The exception to this rule is if you are planning on having your chips customized by printing the actual dollar value on each chip (more on custom poker chips here). In this case, you should have a specific use in mind for your poker chips before having them customized.
eBay
If you're in need for poker chips for your home game then I recommend eBay. But be sure to check the sellers feedback before you buy, and you won't have any trouble.
