Cake Poker Review

The Nuts:  Easy competition. Great promotions.  Tracking prevention software.

The Muck:  Low traffic.  Limited Sit ‘n Go play

U.S. Players?  Yes

Banking Options: Epassporte, Neteller, Moneybookers, Visa and Mastercard

A relative newcomer to the poker scene, Cake Poker made its debut in 2006 by directly marketing to the U.S market.  While it remains one of the smaller online poker venues, Cake Poker offers a top notch gaming experience combined with a fantastic promotional program.

Traffic (4):  Cake Poker averages around 3,400 players logged in at once during this review.  Although Cake is one of the smaller rooms in terms of traffic, it’s expanding rapidly with Texas Hold’em and Omaha ring games seeing the majority of the action.

Game Selection (3):  The MTT tournament scene is respectable with Hold’em tournaments regularly available along with a few sparse offerings for Omaha. Tournament fields tend to be a little smaller than at some of the larger poker rooms, which may be a plus for those who want to spend less time per tournament.

There are usually only 3-4 Sit and Go tables available per buy-in, which may be limiting to multi-tablers.

  • Fixed Limit Games:  $.04-$.08 to $100-$200
  • No Limit/Pot Limit Games:  $.02-$.04 to $50-$100
  • Sit and Go Tournament Buy-ins:  $1.00+$.10 to $300+$12
  • Multi Table Tournament Buy-ins:  $.25+.$10 to $600+$30

Software Performance (10):  Cake Poker has reliable and smooth software that is as good as any of the bigger poker room and has built-in player tracking prevention that foils programs designed to keep stats on individual players.

Graphics (7):  Nothing groundbreaking here.  Graphics are clean and easy on the eyes.  The view of the table is a top down look, with several realistic avatars from which players can choose.  Players who have spent time at Poker Room or Hollywood Poker will definitely notice a similarity in layout.

Bets are represented both by chips and by dollar amounts that are displayed directly under the chips.  Although I found the dollar amounts easy to read for bets, the font underneath the pot is a little small and can be difficult to read. The cards, on the other hand, are big and easy to see.

Game play/interface (9):  The Cake Poker lobby is smartly organized and can be filtered in almost every way imaginable.

Betting buttons are intuitive and simple to use, with a betting slider bar located in the lower right for people who dislike typing in their bet amounts.  You can take notes on your opponents and also mark them with one of 6 colored buttons that indicate different styles of play.

One thing that really sets Cake Poker apart is that it offers web-viewable graphical hand history feature along with a link that allows you to forward hand histories on to friends for shared analysis.  Two thumbs up.

Competition (9):  This is a very fishy site with lots of goofy loose/weak play. Tight/aggressive players should clean up in the low to medium stakes ring games.

Rewards/Promotions (10):  Cake Poker offers a 100% first time deposit bonus up to $500.  Players have 3 months to clear the bonus at a rate of $.06 per raked hand or $ .42 per dollar in tournament buy-ins.  The bonus pays out in $10 increments, so you’ll still be rewarded even if you don’t clear the full amount.

If you refer a friend, you’ll also be rewarded up to $100 of his cleared bonus.

Cake Poker has a Gold Chip rewards program that allows players to cash-in points for merchandise or tournament buy-ins.  The more you play, the easier Gold Chips are to accumulate.

Gold cards that can be redeemed for valuable prizes are also randomly distributed throughout ring game play.
